Damp and mould

Sorry to dampen the Christmas spirit but the contagious mould and damp is evident at this time of year with certain properties. We’re here to give you a few tips on how to control this problem and avoid musty smells.

Property suffering from damp and mould is most unpleasant, however, much of the problem can be avoided by following a few simple tips.

  • Ventilation and airflow is essential – leaving windows open by just an inch will enable sufficient airflow to keep condensation at bay.
  • Trickle vents in windows – make sure you leave them open at all times.
  • Make sure the extractor fan in your bathroom is fully operational when showering and remains on for at least 10 minutes after you have finished.
  • Leave the bathroom door open once you have finished showering.
  • In times of better weather make sure the bathroom window is open a fraction when showering.
  • When cooking make sure the extractor fan is being used – replace the filter annually.
  • If your property is fitted with a home ventilation unit make sure the appliances remains switched on constantly.
  • Do not dry damp washing in the home – washer dryers are provided in all flats and apartments.
  • Ensure there is heat running through your property and that timers are working correctly with gas central heating.
  • Ensure furniture is not in direct contact with the walls – leave a gap to help airflow.
  • If you do experience mould clean the affected area on a regular basis with an antifungal solution/spray or a bleach based product.
