Watch the yachts and ships sail along Southampton Water from your own private terrace atop an enchanting 16th century grade II listed castle. This truly unique 4 bedroom duplex penthouse apartment has 4 private terraces, 3 bathrooms, and enjoys breathtaking, uninterrupted views across the estuary to The New Forest and Southampton docks. It is sold with a share of the freehold which includes 3 acres of gardens, direct access to the beach, and use of the medieval Great Hall for private entertaining.
Electric security gates open to a sweeping driveway past the front of the castle and to the garages. A solid oak door leads to an entrance hall where you can leave boots and umbrellas after a walk along the shore, and can access the passenger lift and staircase. The accommodation is over two floors and is modern and very spacious, with approximately 2700 sq. ft. of living space and a further 950 sq. ft. of external terrace. One of the imposing features is the octagonal tower which comprises a bedroom suite on each level including a mezzanine floor at the top, and a spiral staircase linking the two floors. The drawing room is particularly spacious and is adjacent to a separate dining room. On the upper floor there is a central conservatory leading out to the large decked roof top terrace, and of the three further terraces, one is off the dining room and faces the water, with the remaining two facing the gardens and woodland to the front providing a cool, shaded spot when required.
Netley Castle has a fascinating history dating back to the reign of Henry VIII, where it was originally a gatehouse to the adjacent Cistercian Netley Abbey which was subsequently used as the basis for a castle built between 1540 and 1542 to defend any potential invasion from the French. In addition to being used to blockade Southampton Water during the English Civil War in 1642, some of the most interesting custodians over the years include Sir Henry Ughtred, a notorious pirate, Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford, and subsequently his son William Seymour, both of whom married in secret which upset both Queen Elizabeth I and King James I respectively and landed them both in The Tower Of London.
For best part of the 20th Century the castle was used as a convalescent home, and in 1999 was converted into residential apartments with the new build extension including the penthouse added in 2001 in keeping with the original building. There are just 10 private residences sharing the castle and it's grounds.
Netley Castle is located directly on the shore of Southampton Water at Netley, opposite the old Abbey ruins and just a short walk from the village centre. The centre of Netley retains the charming feel of an old village and is home to local sailing clubs as well as the very beautiful Royal Victoria Country Park. There are infant and junior schools, a secondary school at nearby Hamble, and a railway station at Old Netley linking to Southampton and Portsmouth. The M27 motorway is within easy reach, and Southampton city centre is approximately 4 miles away.
Agents note - each floor has it's own entrance, and with a second kitchen on the upper floor there is scope for it to be used as an independent annex, or for rental purposes.

“I'd like to thank Andy and the team at Marques for their super service selling my late mother's house. It was a very stressful time for all the family and Andy was an absolute star, expecially when we nearly lost the buyers after the survey results. Top Marks Marques!”
