Netley Castle has a fascinating history dating back to the reign of Henry VIII, where it was originally a gatehouse to the adjacent Cistercian Netley Abbey which was subsequently used as the basis for a castle built between 1540 and 1542 to defend any potential invasion from the French. In addition to being used to blockade Southampton Water during the English Civil War in 1642, some of the most interesting custodians over the years include Sir Henry Ughtred, a notorious pirate, Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford, and subsequently his son William Seymour, both of whom married in secret which upset both Queen Elizabeth I and King James I respectively and landed them both in The Tower Of London.
